Solids

Solids are classified in both physical chemistry and classical mechanics.Study of this branch of physics is a must for a civil engineer, for there heavy use in construction knowledge.
Solids have following properties:-
.Rigidity
.High density
.Low volume as compared to other two basic states of matter.
.They occupy space
.They are the heaviest generally, but in some cases liquids can be tremendously heavy than a solid.
.They obey both laws of classical mechanics and quantum mechanics
.Equations of motion are valid for solids during their motion
.They are the coolest state of matter scientifically.
.They have the least amount of heat energy in them as compared to other states of matter.
.There particles undergo least thermal motion.
.Solids can float on liquids depending upon their density and liquid density.
.Density of solid=Mass of solid body/Volume of solid body.
.Solids are of many types and subtypes
A.Crystalline solids
B.Amorphous solids
These are basic types
.solids have many irregularities
.Solids can be metallic,non-metallic and semi metallic and semi-non metallic
.Solids have electrical properties
.Solids have magnetic properties
.Solids can be elastic as well
.Solids have sonorous properties
.Light can pass through solids as well as cannot pass through solids.
.Solids can act as containers
.Solids can be charged.
.Solids csn conduct electricity as well as cannot conduct electricity.
.Solids can be hard as well as soft.Ex:-Rubber is easily breakable soft, while iron is not easily breakable tough.
.Solids allow sound to pass through them acting as medium for sound propogation.
.Particles of solid can vibrate.
.Solids have optical properties.
.Solids can have kinetic energy, both rotational as well as translational kinetic energy.
.Solids can gain potential energy.
.Effects of gravity are visible on solids.
.Solids have matter wave as per de broglie hypothesis.
A solid and soft candy bar.The particles may possess weak vander waal forces so easily breakable, can be melt other than higher basic forces in nature.
